Remove Slavery from the History Books? That’s What Tennessee’s Tea Party Is Asking

January 26, 2012  |

The Tennessee tea party wants to move “incidents” like slavery and genocide out of the history textbooks. Why? Because they are afraid that these “incidents” would tarnish the image of the founding fathers of the U.S.

Yes, you are reading this right. They want to erase history and the fact that our country was founded on both slavery and the wipe out of the native’s population.

On January 11, members of the Tennessee tea party presented this idea to their state legislatures, with five priorities of action to change the state’s history curriculum and supposedly to educate students on “the truth” about America.

Some of the changes presented that they’re hoping for include the following: to reference the slave trade as the “Atlantic Triangular Trade,” to have the first black President to be announced as “Barack Hussein Obama,” (how convenient) and to state that the Constitution created a Republic and not a Democracy.

Salon reports that the tea party also doesn’t want their kids to learn that many of the founding fathers owned slaves.

Fayette County attorney Hal Rounds, the group’s lead spokesman during the news conference, said the group wants to address “an awful lot of made-up criticism about, for instance, the founders intruding on the Indians or having slaves or being hypocrites in one way or another.”

Overall it would push for a more biased and skewed version of history, one that is completely false and untrue. It is bad enough that the educational system doesn’t teach our full American history or that of other individuals of color who helped build this country. Unfortunately, American history equals white history and the occasional lessons of slavery, the civil rights movement, and if you’re lucky (as hell) the Harlem Renaissance. But now people are trying to rub out the little acknowledgement of our struggles and history that we get?

This is a complete white wash of history at its finest. Will they actually get to change the curriculum? Most likely not, but it’s scary to think there are people out there are who are trying very hard to paint a false picture of our country’s history and founding fathers as clean as a whistle for the most random and useless of purposes. Go get a hobby.

I read the headline and had to shake may head. I know the Tea Party has truly challenged people, but I had hoped someone sensible was in there (degrees don’t make you “smart” by they way, much proof on that), but the nuts keep coming out of the wood works!

American “History” is already warped. All history is warped. It’s individuals recollections of events before our time. How do we know if they wrote the truth or simply their the perception of the truth? To blatantly try to rewrite history for whatever hare-brained reason they have, shake my head. SOMEONE CALL THE MEDICS! LUNATICS ARE ABOUND!

The real problem is that blacks are basically invisible in the media. *at least where it counts* Even though blacks and other minorities represent over 30% of the population they control only 3% of the media houses. LOL you read that right. So please stop complaining when you see blacks portrayed as imbeciles and thugs cause the truth is no matter how many so called “black movies” are put out the heads and the ones who grant clearance are white and if it doesn’t suite their taste its getting shelved. Please encourage your children to be entrepreneurs and not just the next Kobe *hehehe* Remember to own is to have power.

Since so many of us as black people have totally disrespected our past by killing, raping and drugging our way from one incident to the next why should there by any question as to why our past should be removed. Our history is extremely important but all a lot of us have done with it is allowed ourselves to fall prey to everything and anything that destruct us a human being. Martin Luther King would not have been happy with the state we are in right now. However, Jesse Jackson, Maxine Waters and Al Sharpton to name a few are as proud as can be what does that say for us as a people. Since so many of us have failed to respect ourselves and our past is there any wonder as to why they think its so unimportant.

I personally interviewed Mr. Hal Rounds , Tennessee Teaparty Spokesperson , about this last year on my radio program :  blogtalkradio.com/vickissv3/2011/01/20/reckless-20-w-hal-rounds
I strongly suspect he was practicing white supremacy during the interview.

This is pathetic. I say teach EVERYTHING that happened throughout history. The founding fathers did own slaves. Martin Luther King Jr. was caught up in plagiarism scandals. Clinton got a blowjob from that chick Lewinsky. No witches were burned during the salem witch trails! You can’t act like these things didn’t happen. while these people throughout history were not perfect they still did great things. I don’t blame the white guy in the office next to me for slavery but I’m not going to act like it didn’t happen. Sit back, take a shot, and enjoy the show because it all happened that’s what we all need to deal with.

It’s at this juncture where American people of color are forced to tell their own stories.  Shout out your stories from the highest mountaintops, from the pulpits of your churches, from the dinner tables of your homes, from your places of gathering, when you sit with your children, your mothers and fathers, your brothers and sisters……WAIT!  Naah, we all too busy watching RHOA and RHOBH and RHOOC and RHONJ and the rest of those RH’s.  That’s what they want us to talk to each other about, and we do.

  • Sugar_Spice

WOW REALLY??????!!!! To me, for them to feel like they need to change the history books is an admission of guilt of sorts or they just simply feel like it wasn’t a big deal. A lot of people (specifically whites in my experiences) have told us to get over it. They try to act like slavery & the genocides of Native Americans never happened. This nation was built on violence & hate & you just can’t simply erase history. I wonder if they’ll erase Lincolns presidency term & his views on slavery while they are at it. Sorry for my rant.
