BET co-founder and philanthropist, Sheila Johnson envisions new hopes for the HIV/AIDS crisis in Washington as she begins work on a new project to focus on the severity of the problem.

The District has the highest rates of HIV/AIDS in the country, and is even higher than the number of poor countries in Africa which shows how widespread the disease is in the black community. As a proponent, Johnson invested $500,000 to create: “The Other City“, a film that highlights the HIV/AIDS crisis in Washington, DC.

Opening people’s eyes to the virus, “The Other City” features actual patients who are stricken with the disease or dying from it. The documentary also touches upon how drugs, homelessness and health care have added to the high disparity.

Before it airs on television, The Other City will be screened in Los Angeles; New York; Washington, D.C.; San Francisco; Chicago; Philadelphia; Atlanta; Orlando, Fla.; and other cities. Check theothercity.com for updates.
