The Men of ‘Red Tails’ Cover Ebony’s Black Love Issue

January 6th, 2012 - By Brande Victorian

There’s nothing like handsome black men to celebrate black love and Ebony knows that. Gracing the cover of their February issue are Nate Parker, Terrence Howard, David Oyelowo, and Cuba Gooding, Jr, the cast of George Lucas’ upcoming movie, “The Red Tails,” which tells the story of the heroic Tuskegee airmen.

Inside, they also have the leading men’s cast mates, Elijah Kelley, Ne-Yo, Tristan Wilds, Michael B. Jordan, Method Man, and Leslie Odom, Jr.

The story of the the first African American pilots to fly in a combat squadron during World War II is one that definitely needed to be told on the big screen and it’s great to see such as strong cast of black men working in Hollywood.

Check out a trailer for Red Tails below. Do you plan to see this movie when it’s released Jan. 20?

Wow ..Mystified…I am with you!  Yes…All of Ya’lls go see the film.  Everybody… May the brothers be paid and take their checks to their white wives! Remember, Hollywood is an illusion factory…even as they try to tell real stories…. All those fine Black men who for the most part came from fine Black women, and the only major love image in the movie is a Black soldier in love with a White Woman “The most beautiful woman in the world” is the line as I remember it. His dying action is kissing her photo as he bites the dust….The ever present Mandingo lust for the White Woman hits the screen again…but he doesn’t attain and keep that love….He dies…. Unbelievable that that many Black men would be on a project and not one beautiful Black woman is longed for..not even a photo of a Black girlfriend or wife kissed goodnight. (unless they redid the script. I did see an early preview and wrote to LucasFilm)…Love should be colorblind, but when media continues to glorify one race over another in intentional and unintentional albeit ubiquitous ways, balance needs to be called for….  For all the Black men hanging on trees, for all the Emmett Tills, I cry…and I cry for those who take their murders so lightly…. It’s a sad day in Post Racist America…It’s a sad day among the descendants of African Slaves in America…It’s a sad day for so many to be so blinded by distraction as not to see the truth… Wonder how the Black Wives and Black Girlfriends of the real Tuskegee Airmen will feel when they see “Red Tails!”…. Go see it… Great Film….Very Entertaining….but it’s Hollywood For Real….an incomplete illusion!  And Ebony, along with Essence, aren’t they White-owned…The Black editor who spoke up about the disingenuous Black Love Cove Page was probably demoted or fired.  Consider the source!

I would love to see this film when it comes out. How often is there a good black action movie out.

For those of you with something negative to say, you clearly have issues. This movie is about real black heros fighting for this country and kicking behind doing it. And you want Ebony niot to support the movie by putting it on the cover because two of the stars have white wifes?!

Let it go. Love yourself and spend less time worrying who someone else is loving. Who said that these guys didn’t date black women as well. Maybe they just happened to fall in love with the particular white women they married.

Everbody knows every February Ebony lists their favorite black couples in the magazine. That’s what they were referring to when they said black love issue, not what each individual man in Red Tails is doing in his life.

You mean all 4 on the cover have non-black wives. I still plan to see the movie.

Support our heroes who serving our nation. Support our troops that safeguard our safety. Please check out“uniformedkiss.c o  m”. It’s the largest and best club for seeking people in uniform and the admirers of those who wear the uniform. You are not necessary to be a uniformed person. But come here, you can find friendship, love, romance, marriage or even more with those armed forces, police, navy, security, medical, ambulance, prison, air crew and fire fighters!

Will not watch it, will not support these men, they way they behave does not do it for me, They do not peak my interest. It’s a shame because George Lucas is married to a Black woman, but I have seen the preview and Terrance Howard cannot carry a film, he is to self-centered. They needed a strong man who seems like he cares for people other than himself. Sorry not interested

      >the

  • LOL

None of the 4 on the cover have black wives. Black love issue? hmm

  • Wow

So now black love must mean only one of the parties has to be black b/c some of these guys i.e Terrence, Cuba, MJ, are pretty odd choices since they are the only thing that is black in their relationships and they make no bones about it. Kinda sad when you thihats about it that ebony couldn’t find enough celebs in relationships with sisters that they just had to put in the ones who are the exact negation of their title.

Didn’t we see a movie on this topic starring Lawrence Fishburne years ago (1995)?
Anyway, it’s still good, since we’ll get more actions and more special effects. I’m in!!

    • darkman

Funny, Cubba Gooding Jr is already in the first version…

    • reese

Atleast it has black people in a drama.  How often do we see blacks portrayed positive in Hollywood?  I am hoping to see black families portrayed in it.  The only ones we see nowadays is in a Tyler Perry flick.

  • Mystified

Oh! My bad. This is about the Tuskegee Airman movie.  But still………..

  • Mystified

Elijah Kelly is from my hometown, in Georgia.  He’s a great guy from a great family, and he’s coming up.

  • Mystified

WHY IS CUBA GOODING, JR., ON THE COVER AS AN EXAMPLE OF BLACK LOVE WHEN HE IS MARRIED TO A WHITE WOMAN? AND I BELIEVE SO IS TERRENCE HOWARD IS ALSO MARRIED TO A WHITE WOMAN.  HOW CAN THEY REPRESENT BLACK LOVE AND MARRIED TO WHITE WOMEN?  SHOULDN’T BLACK LOVE BE BETWEEN A BLACK MAN AND A BLACK WOMAN?

    • darkman

When a black person is in love, it’s enough to be called black love. Anyway, the topic of this article is the airmen, not black love. Ebony Magazine is making money with this cover nt related with the month main topic

    • darkman

By the way, George Lucas date black women: can he make the cut about black love? For me yes…
