It’s Bad Boy For Life? Artists Whose Talents Are/Were Wasted Under Bad Boy Records

January 5th, 2012 - By MN Editor

"janelle monae and diddy"

Anyone that knows anything about Bad Boy Records knows that to say the name “Bad Boy” is to say it with a small (okay, maybe big) sense of disappointment. So many acts with so much talent have floundered under the recording label that was founded and is headed up by CEO Diddy.  For the past few years, it seems that to be signed to Bad Boy Records is to be here one day, singing and dancing and smiling for the cameras (reality TV cameras too) and then find yourself in a pit of obscurity, back on your mother’s couch the next.

In an interview with DJ Whoo Kid recently, Diddy said a lot of the criticism of his label is just straight up hate:

“Over the last couple of years, there’s been a strong propaganda movement that’s been brewing in the negative sense against Bad Boy, against what it is to sign to the Bad Boy label, if it’s a detriment to your career,” Diddy said. “Just hate. Just regular hate and also a lot of people not understanding how this industry works. … This is not a PG-rated industry. If you’re weak, you’ll be eaten alive.”

Hey, I might be hater by his standards, but when you have to reassemble your entire roster every two years, do reality TV shows to find talent that you squander, and spend more time promoting your own musical efforts than that of your artists, it’s safe to say your formula isn’t working. With that, and Diddy’s recent proclamation that people with two eyes that can see a catastrophe are haters, check out our list of Bad Boy artists who could have done really big or bigger things…if they hadn’t or weren’t signed to Bad Boy.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one that noticed that.  He don’t want anyone to be bigger than him.

I agree, anyone who works with Diddy gets “lost in the sauce”. If I was ever a up and coming artist, no matter how desperate I was, I would never sign with Bad Boy. I do miss DK, they were such a good group. They did make it but he broke them.  And what about DAY 26, I loved them too.

Don’t forget about Total.  They had a lot of hits

I mean see how he did: Total, Mary J, Loon, Black Rob, Boyz in Da Hood (glad Young Jeezy didn’t decide to stay with them, he’d be right with them), Gorilla Zoe, Young Joc, 112, G-Dep, B5, Day 26, Craig Mack, Keith Murray, Mario Winans, 8ball and MJG (TOTAL waste of talent) New Edition…

No one disputes other labels drop artists, but the quota of artists pushing numbers on their debut albums and leaving after that is quite high with BadBoy. I don’t count Shyne because his bad actions cost his career, and Faith’s bad decisions stalled hers. Diddy’s mentality is “give them 15 minutes and two albums max”. Diddy was too focused on Ma$e and BIG to properly devote time to anyone else. if he wasn’t so insistent on inflicting his nonexistent rap skills on the world, he could have more enduring and loyal artists.

What about Total? that was a great group too. It seems people who were signed to bad boy end up ever making music again, or making any type of successful record. like there bound to a clause that forbid’s them to making more music. but who am i to say

As Suga Knight pointed out along time of ago “if you don’t want your manager all up in your video all on the record, dancing. come to DeathRow!!!” Not that DeathRow was any better. But at least Snoop, Dre, & Pac had longivity. I loved 112!!! What about Day 26. Robert & Mike could actually sing. What ever happened to the 1st making the band. Where is Chooper & ‘em back in the hood I suppose.

ANY BODY WHO HAS COMMON SENSE
KNOWS BETTER THEN TO EVER SIGN WITH BAD BOY RECORDS!
    WHY YOU MIGHT ASK?
SIMPLY BECAUSE THE CEO OF THE COMPANY IS MORE CONCERN WITH HIS MUSIC THEN HE WILL EVER BE WITH ANY ARTIST SIGN TO HIM!

Yea i agree diddy took down a lot of careers he had a lot of really good talent at bad boy but when you are as conceited as diddy nothing good ever comes out of being on his label. The proof is in all the groups he had on his label and noone has good career went anywhere sad but true
