Erykah Badu Explains Why Home Births Are Important for Black Women

December 29th, 2011 - By Brande Victorian

Erykah Badu has long been an advocate of home birthing; she delivered all three of her children at home and has been a doula since since 2001. In a recent interview with Chika Oduah of The Grio, Erykah talked about getting her credentials to deliver babies, the increased rate of infant deaths in the black community, and how she even served as her own doula with her second child.

“It’s a very natural thing. It’s an ancient art. We have been doing this from the beginning of time,” she says.

While Erykah has mostly served as a doula to relatives, she said that people will tweet her about helping them have a home birth and if the timing works out she’s willing to do it. Could you imagine Erykah Badu delivering your baby?

Regardless of whether you decide to give birth the traditional way–which Erykah says is without medical intervention–or in a hospital, the main focus, she says, is to have a healthy mother and a healthy baby.

Check out her interview here and tell us your thoughts. Would you consider having a home birth?

She does come off as very warm and spiritual, radiating inner and outer beauty.  I pray that I will be able to have a completely natural process for my second child. Another option that women should consider is a birthing center at a hospital.  I think it provides the best of both worlds in that you have the natural birth experience but if there are any complications the medical facilities are right there.  The Business of Being Born presented this option in the movie and I think that it is a good one.  My mom is an OB nurse and she does discuss women rushing into to the emergency room because of complications that emerge at home births.  Birth is a natural process but it is still  a complex process and certain medical interventions can be life saving.

A doula does not deliver a baby. Mothers birth the babies, Doulas are emotional & physical support during the labor… :)

Go Erykah….Birth is a natural process, a deeply spiritual event.  Midwives are skilled, trained Health Care Providers and I trust a midwife’s loving, compassionate care over an OB/GYN any day.  I have had, would do it again and will continue to   strongly encourage that Black Women in this country educate themselves about their birth options and consider a home birth…especially if you have had uncomplicated births in the pass or want to heal a traumatic hospital birth experience with a provider of your choice who will do their best to honor you and your birth as sacred.

If you get a chance watch THE BUSINESS OF BEING BORN on netflix watch instantly.  It will change  your world!!! you will want the natural birth.. We have unbelievably high maternal and infant mortality rates. often the highest of all industrialized nations.

I have wanted a home birth too. Considering my bf is a doctor he should be able to deliver our baby when I have one.

Does that not go against the medical ethical oath where doctors are unable to perform medical practices on family members unless there is an emergency? Does child labour fall under that?

      I’m unsure.

Hurray for home birth! Wish i had done it way back when i had my first one. Sadly i was poor and home birth wasn’t an option at that time for medicaid patients

Hi Sweetea!  Many midwives will barter and accept payment plans. I paid for two out of three of my home births. Protecting the scared space of my birth was worth the sacrifice. Medicade pays now though!
