Different Strokes, Same Folks: Our Favorite Type Casted Celebrities

December 24th, 2011 - By Drenna Armstrong

You ever watch a movie and say to yourself, “Dag, why do they always play the same role in every movie?” The people on this list, whether accidentally or intentionally, have pretty much played the same person in every movie we’ve seen them in. Don’t get me wrong, I love most of these actors and actresses but I often wonder if they think about the roles they’ve played or if they’re fine with the “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix” rule of thumb…

Loretta Devine should be added to the list…she always plays the ‘ever-worried mother’ in her movies..

    Don’t forget Meagan Good

Ooh, what about Loretta Devine, she’s always playing the nice little grandmother in all her movies!

where is Kimberly “I cry in every role I take” Elise?

I love Angela Basset she is an outstanding/beautiful actress however I do not agree with MN stating she plays the same character repeatedly…..She has ventured into multiple diverse roles which is what I love about her…..Angela is an extraordinary and strong actress…..I wish Hollywood would focus more attention on her instead of someone like Halle Berry (that is all the media/Hollywood ever seem to push for)….I am not hating on Ms. Berry because she is also a beautiful woman however there are alot of other black female actresses that are just as talented or even better…..I am proud Ms. Berry has became an accomplished actress and won an Oscar….I just want to see more black female actresses recieve the same opportunity as her.

I also love Tasha Smith, Michelle Rodriguez, Samuel Jackson and Julia Roberts….I would have to say that MN did hit it on nail about them playing the same characters all the time (Usually its with a different twist)…….JMO!

I completely disagree with the take on Angela Bassett roles. She’s very good at the “angry dont mess with me black woman”….but many of her roles were not. Her role as Rosa Parks didnt fit the bill, neither did her roles as Betty Shabazz or Katherine Jackson. Come again.

I totally agree. When I saw Angela’s face pop up I did a double take. Angela is smart, and is clearly trying all she can to pick out of the litter of bad predictable scripts. Angela has played more subtle parts than angry black woman parts. Notorious, How Stella Got her Grove Back are more examples of Angela playing more diverse characters on screen.  I don’t know what this article writer was smoking when he added both Angela and Sam to the list.

Agree 100% regarding Angela Basset but Samuel Jackson I always felt he seem to play the same roles.

    • Love_Sexy

Yes that was what I was trying to point out in my post that she has played many different characters.

    • BowBow

I agree.  While Angela Bassett is a talented and gifted actress, her range in playing different characters is quite limited.  In some of the roles that she has played, she has not been able to emote the different emotions and passions to make the story believable

  • Krazyk433

Excuse me but do you actually watch a lot of movies?? most of the actors displayed here are not playing the SAME roles everytime…you need to do some serious research!…unless you know everyting about a certian topic ( such as movie roles), dont write an article on it. period.

    • Sugar_Spice

I agree with you 100%; Julia Roberts….Erin Brocovich/Steel Magnolias, Jennifer Aniston…..Horrible Bosses/The Good Girl, Samuel Jackson……Jungle Fever/Star Wars.  Not the same or even similar at all

  • lolo

    this article sucks!

  • Miss Charla

What about Paula Jai Parker…she always plays the hoochies

    • Love_Sexy

      Yep!

    • MokaExecGroup

How about Terrance “Whoop that Trick” Howard – either a pimp or sh*t starter…

  • AnnaRenee

Because Hollyweird is so rigid for black actresses, they had better take whatever is offered, and be thankful for it.  I love it though, when they use their talents outside of Hollywood and create theatre, dance studios, acting schools, production companies, and stuff like that.  That way they can expand their creativity, while collecting that Hollywood money.

      Good point!
