Pearl Gosnell, wife of Kermit Gosnell, the Philadelphia doctor charged with running an illegal abortion clinic described as a “house of horrors,” has also admitted to performing illegal procedures there.
The Women’s Medical Society is the name of the abortion clinic run by the Gosnells where babies born alive were killed by having their spinal cords severed with scissors. Authorities say neither spouse was qualified to perform the procedures, although Pearl Gosnell, 50, who was a cosmetologist, claimed she was certified to take temperatures and blood pressure by a technical institute, but couldn’t provide records of proof because the school had closed.
Pearl pleaded guilty to performing an abortion after 24 weeks of pregnancy, two counts of conspiracy, and participating in a corrupt organization Tuesday. Her 70-year-old husband, Kermit, pleaded not guilty to murder, however. He is charged with the deaths of seven babies and a patient who died of a painkiller overdose while awaiting an abortion. On Monday, a judge scheduled pre-trial motions for the case for Aug. 13 and a capital jury trial for March 2013.
Eight other clinic employees were also charged in the case, and six have pleaded guilty–some of whom plan to testify against Kermit. According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, Gosnell faces up to 54 years in prison, but her actual sentence would not be “nearly that long.”
