On Wall Street White Men Earn Twice As Much As Black Women

December 2nd, 2011 - By Brande Victorian

It’s not exactly a shocker that white men are at the top of the economic chain on Wall Street, but the fact that their average earnings are more than double that of black women makes me want to go occupy something.

Here’s the breakdown of average annual salaries according to the recent Progress and Pitfalls of Diversity on Wall Street report:

White men: $155K
White women: $100K
Black men: $90K
Black women: $60K

The numbers are based on the 2005 to 2009 American Communities Survey and show a 15% increase in earnings for white men compared to data from the 2000 federal census.

Hmph. Cheers to the 99%. Did you suspect white men were banking that much more than black women on Wall Street?

  • Char

You have to remember about 90% of the time white men and women are generally more qualified than black men and women.

    • Allegra

If received the same education and same grades with the same experience, how is my white counterpart more qualified? Sexism and Racism play a huge role….Most of the time blacks are more qualified…Black Tax, Google it…

B*tch you are full of sh*t. Color has nothing to do with the qualifications and skills a person has to offer. You would have known that if you weren’t such a simple minded b*tch. I feel sorry for your kids or future kids cuz they will be as dumb and ignorant as YOU!

The way you type makes you seem a lot more ignorant than Char.  Whilst i don’t agree with the broad sweeping statement of Char, it must be noted that black people are quite clearly under-represented in Wall street in non-clerical and non-admin positions.  Asians are over-represented though.  It would be more interesting to know if a black associate at Mckinsey was earning less than a white associate even though they did the same position.

You don’t know me so I could care less about your opinions.

And your point in listing these stats are…

My question is this: what are their titles? For example, if a black woman is working as a receptionist on Wall Street and a white man is working as a banker or head accountant on Wall Street, they won’t possibly earn the same salary and it’s rediculous to even think that the gap would not be wide. If they have the same titles, are working for the same company and the gap is that big, then you might have a story. If you’re going to give stats, back them up with detailed information.

I thought the same thing when I read this article. Those stats are meaningless without context or further clarification.

Outrageous, but I am hoping this is at least in part due to the positions black women hold as opposed to white men. It doesn’t specify whether the different positions were taken into account (clearly a lot more minorities are breaking into wall street now, and are more represented in analyst and associate positions, while a lot of white men are still holding on to those most senior, and most lucrative, positions)

lol. I bet alot of black woman are mad. Bet they thought they were earning more than black men…. well NOPE

    • alldawg

Facts are meaningless to ones ego…

  • One Love

    Surprised? No Ma’am. Outraged? Absolutely.

The TRUTH of the matter is however, that …..

Equality has NEVER lived on Wall Street… not for women and most assuredly not for people of color.

  • STFUUIgnants

Hm, thought black women were so heads and shoulders above black men…guess not.

    • dddooonnnttt
