Culo: Admiration or Objectification of the Booty?

December 2nd, 2011 - By Brande Victorian

There’s been buzz around Culo for a little bit now, but the 248-page coffee table book about women’s backsides just became available for purchase last week.

The collaboration between Sean “Diddy” Combs, Interscope Geffen A&M Chairman Jimmy Iovine, and fashion photographer Raphael Mazzucco is supposed to be a celebration of the booty as the “epicenter of female sexuality, desire, and empowerment,” but marketing behind the book makes it look like an upscale version of Maxim—particularly the preview video featuring suspect lyrics from rapper Pitbull.

Executed differently, Culo might have stood a chance underneath the overarching cloud of female objectification, but I have a feeling this effort is going to get passed over as poorly packaged sexist machismo no matter how tasteful the images are–particularly in light of the lengths people will go to get the booty. I also couldn’t help but notice a lack of brown derrieres in the promo, although that could be a good thing in this instance.

Check out the clip and tell us your thoughts. Is Culo something you’d have on your coffee table?

There is a differce between celbrating curves and objectifying and accepting that because it’s better than being viewed negatively

MADAME’S by my calculations you have approximately two more times to bring up the lack of chocolate in advertising etc…(thrice this week already) before you start sounding like crazy people and de-value the whole cause. Keep in mind because of your site; plenty models of color, such as myself, have more work. And that is ALL you can control.

WTF is with the title? Nobody could have been more creative? i.e. The Lower End Theory. ( big Up to the tribe)That title is classy and a$$y!

All I wanna know is:  when is the Culo de Hombre being released?

“lack of brown derriers” is a cause for concern??  The fact that curves are being “celebrated” should be considered a win for melanin blessed woman of the world.  Black woman “can’t win for losing”, its either “so-n-so rapper didn’t have us in their video” or its “why are black women always being objectified!” STOP IT ALREADY AND JUST LIVE YOUR LIFE!

      BOO.

Thank heavens black women arent all over this book, because that would only fuel the worlds misconceptions that we’re promiscuous, big bootied animals who are not to be taken seriously.

And if you think im wrong, survey asian/indian, arab and white men and see how many who are willing to not only date and sleep with a black woman…. but who would actually put a ring on her finger and take her home to his family.
