“Hail to the V” Ads: Summer’s Eve Serves Up Racist Stereotypes

Summer's Eve Hail to the V: RacistBy Alexis Garrett Stodghill

The new “Hail to the V” ad campaign from Summer’s Eve is the latest in a recent string of ads that stereotype blacks, particularly black women, in the most disturbing of ways. The campaign is comprised of three different ads, each depicting a woman’s vagina — talking as a vertical “mouthing” hand. That sounds bad enough, but what makes the “Hail to the V” campaign disgusting is how the race and culture of each lady part of color is made aggressively clear. While the white hand gets to talk in an educated voice about wholesome things like going to the gym, the black hand talks about weaves and hitting the club — and the Latina hand? She derides her owner’s tacky leopard thong in a string of Spanish-laced saucy talk.  Really Summer’s Eve?

Truly, this level of racial stereotyping has to be seen to be believed. Exhibit A — The black vagina squawks:

From the “neck swivel” of the black vajayjay’s wrist, to the use of non-existent urban slang made up by ad agency executives who likely have never watched an episode of “Girlfriends,” this travesty of communication packs a whopper of black female cooning. Why didn’t they throw in a reference to waiting in line for your welfare check and keeping your “V” fresh after chasing down your baby daddy? I bet that’s already in the works for the follow-up.

Exhibit B — Oh those fiery Latinas!

I truly could not believe my ears when I heard this accent. Having lived in New York City for 16 years, and knowing many Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Mexicans and Peruvians personally, I have never heard anyone talk like this. This is a Latina accent on crystal meth. And you have to wonder why. If this ad was meant to appeal to Latinas, why not depict said woman’s Latina vagina talking in a realistic way? (Okay, I know that doesn’t make any sense, but you have to work with me in this absurd context.)

There are certainly some tough questions to be asked.

First off, who created the campaign? Since diversity isn't a priority at ad agencies and women are also discriminated against, it most likely was a bunch of middle aged, white guys.

But that isn't really the problem. With the proper research, sensitivity, thoughtfulness, smarts and experience… great ads can be achieved targeting diverse groups no matter what the background of the person is working on it.

In other words, there are plenty of "Hispanic" agencies that use racial stereo types in the worst way to appeal to hispanic customers.

Anyway, the ads are highly offensive and dumb. Most likely born during a late night crunch session…. "Hey dude, wouldn't it be great…?" – Enough said.

By the way, the client and agency ran some highly offensive ads last year. I guess they didn't learn their lesson… just don't buy the product and they'll get the massage!

Sounds like a useless piece of garbage anyways.

These ads are humiliating and degrading to women. We (women) are now just reduced to talking vaginas! Do not buy summers eve products. Call your local store managers and urge them not to fill their shelves with these products. Tell your friends to do the same. Return your summers eve products too (straight back to summers eve) and tell them why. We dont need to be humiliated and insulted by any ad campaign regardless of the product. Women are strong intelligent and capable of so much more than what summers eve thinks we are: talking vaginas.

Womens bodies are amazing ! Our bodies can do so much! In choosing a product for use on my body, I want to feel good about my body and celebrate all that a womans body can do! I am not a talking vagina! And I will not use a product that makes fun of my body, my femininity, my race! Shame on you summers eve ! Shame on you

I'm so SHOCKED that this idea was even considered as something they would put on the air. It should have been "thrown out" as soon as it was presented. But, this just proves how ignorant some people still are when it comes to race…

    Good post. Agreed.

Some of the main people that should be criticized are the women that participated in these voice overs.
