7 African-American Mayors You Haven’t Heard About Yet

April 28th, 2011 - By TheEditor

By Christina Burton

We’ve all heard of the career-killing misdeeds of former mayors  Kwame Kilpatrick and Sheila Dixon. Once the media got hold of their stories, they became household names.  At the other extreme of national attention is a superstar like Cory Booker.  But of course, the landscape of  African-American mayors is wider than that. The Atlanta Post rounds up seven municipal leaders that, although are overlooked by the national spotlight, have earned distinction (not all good) in their communities.

Byron Brown

"byron brown"

Buffalo, NY

Mayor Brown, a Democrat, started off slow in the violent and cold city of Buffalo.  With a campaign focused on abolishing crime and poverty, Brown made efforts to be a part of Buffalo’s firearms solution, helping the city’s homicide rate plummet 20 percent. His secondary problem, poverty,  forced him to set aside funds for demolishing abandoned buildings and clean up trash. With Brown persuading the city to install cameras on street corners, Buffalo’s murder rate shot down 50 percent by early 2009. Controversy has also surrounded this mayor, as well as his aides and business partners, but no charges have been filed.

Cory Booker is a liar. If you take a poll with the residents of Newark; 96 percent will say they dislike him. Crime is high but outside of Newark Booker tells people crime is down. The true facts says it all. That's why I'm glad that July 1st 2011 the Citizens of Newark will begin the RECALL OF CORY BOOKER. We already have well over 400 citizens ready and willing to do the RECALL OF BOOKER

Look at my mayor Cedric Glover! He won that reelection even with the free limo rides and chicken wings some people were giving out to try to get the black vote!!!

East Chicago Indiana has a young passionate black mayor. He is also a firefighter a a champion on crime in his community You should do a story on him. Anthony Copeland for President!

  • Otis Trace

What about Mayor William D. Euille of Alexandria, Virginia? He was first elected in 2003 and re-elected in 2006 and 2009. He was raised here and graduated from high school here before going off to college in Connecticut, and then came back here to become a successful businessman. His keen intelligence and easy going manner make him a very popular public figure under whom the city has done very well. Take a closer look at the man and do another article.

What about the first black Mayor of Columbia, SC? Steve Benjamin is his name.

I wish this list had included Mayor Steve Benjamin of Columbia, SC. Though not as big as some of the cities mentioned, Columbia is the capital of the state. Being so close to GA, I would've expected him to be on this list. However, I am proud of the seven leaders mentioned!
