Sales Tax Receipts Rise in Metro Chicago, Signaling Retail Revival

(Chicago Business Journal) — Sales tax receipts throughout the metropolitan area increased in 2010, according to the Illinois Department of Revenue, signaling the first rise in retail spending since 2008…Overall, sales tax revenue in the six-county area advanced 3.4% to $7.46 billion last year. Increases in subcategories including apparel, restaurants and general merchandise indicate shoppers have picked up their discretionary spending. Cook County taxes from restaurants, for example, increased nearly 3% and apparel was up almost 4%.
