When TMZ ran up on Djimon Hounsou, I’m sure they thought they were throwing him a light and easy question about his Father’s Day. Instead, it exposed a bit of dysfunction in his blended, coparenting dynamic with Kimora Lee Simmons, mother of his child Kenzo Lee Hounsou.

“It would have been nice to see my son for Father’s Day. It would have also been nice if I could see him to at least talk to him, like all fathers.”

When TMZ asked Hounsou when was the last time he’d seen his son, he held up his hand as if to say that’s enough. But he reconsidered quickly and turned toward the camera and said, “I can’t even recall myself, how about that.”

Later, another reporter asked him if he was in the middle of a custody battle with Kimora. He denied that.

“Listen bro, it’s no custody battle. I’m not…I’m not in a lawyer’s office, am I?”

When the reporter asked if he’d like to send a message to Kimora, he scoffed, smiled and got into his car.

I have to admit this is a suprising development. Given how Kimora has blended her family with three different men, Russell Simmons, Djimon Hounsou and her current husband Tim Leissner. From the looks of their social media posts and conversations with one another, it seemed that things were alway solid with all parties involved.

But if we were paying closer attention to Kimora’s Instagram feed over the weekend, we might have noticed that something was amiss. While Lee Simmons wished both Russell and Leissner a Happy Father’s Day, Hounsou was noticeably absent.

And her note to Leissner seemed to offer a comparison.

Interesting. Hopefully, they’ll be able to work something out for the sake of Kenzo.
