"Serena Williams"By Christopher Kendalls

For various reasons bloggers continue to talk about Serena Williams interesting, and curious fashion choices on the tennis court.  I understand that Serena Williams is an athlete, I get that.  I also understand that even though Serena Williams is not sitting behind a desk or climbing the corporate ladder, she will be still be judged as though she were.  For someone who is accomplished as she is, one expects that the way she presents herself on and off the court would mirror those accomplishments.

I do not think that her outfits are a distraction from her performance as much as it is a diversion and a convenient way for the rest of us to find fault with her where none should exist.  True fans of her sport would still clear their calendar in order to enjoy good seats to watch her play at the latest tournament.  On one hand, we already know that Serena Williams is going to win in whatever tournament she plays in.  If you don’t give people something to talk about, they will take you granted even though your are still at the top of your game.

On the other hand, no one wants to see Serena to get noticed for the wrong thing.  We all have this angst that Serena will turn into a caricature of herself.  But are we really embarrassed for Serena Williams, or are we embarrassed of Serena Williams?

How many of us bloggers actually talked about Serena when she wasn’t wearing crazy outfits?  How many of us actually watch the matches to see just how well she continues to do on the court?  I often wonder just how much of the critique is about the fact that Serena is her own person and can get away with what me and you cannot do on the job as opposed to whether or not we truly care about her style …

I don't mind Serena and Venus wearing their designs. Except in a few instances, I find they look very nice.

But I wish I could see them without the HEAD DRESS … and their mother, too.

No thanks
