I don’t wear scarves when I exercise. I didn’t do it at any hair stage really, permed or natural, and when I go to my boxing gym, I don’t see the other Black women I come in contact with in them. When I asked the women in my office who exercise, they said they go without (one doesn’t even sleep in a scarf — tuh). But many women are still all about protecting their edges and avoiding sweating out their hair while exercising, so they make working out in a scarf a priority. Even the famous folks, who have access to glam squads and stylists who can keep their hair on point, see the benefit in enlisting the help of a scarf.

Take Reginae Carter for example. The 19-year-old is not one to play around when it comes to her workouts, and she’s worn a scarf during a few recent training sessions that she shared on social media. Even though she was wearing braids, she still wanted to keep her strands as protected as possible in the already protective style:

The reality star is training hard in preparation for the Weight No More 5K race her mom, Toya Wright, and her trainer are putting on this weekend. The race is to help fight against obesity, and to encourage people to get moving and be the best versions of themselves. To get ready for that, Reginae has been fitting in more workouts, including boxing sessions, in her trusty scarf:

Her efforts have been paying off, as she shared earlier this month that she actually was shocked to find that she lost 10 pounds in five days.

“I wanna thank my trainer @iamthekingoffitness for helping me through this fitness journey!” she said. “I lost 10 pounds in 5 days which was very very shocking to me lol . I kept getting on the scale like uhhh is this real ? But it is !! Because I had discipline and I stuck with my diet ! You guys can too!! Join me ! #WNM18 #NoDaysOff”

Looking good — and those edges are still intact.

Scarves aren’t the only look that people try when they exercise. I’ve also seen a few caps, some headbands, and even a bonnet here and there (the latter gets more of a bad rap, though). If you keep your hair covered when you hit the gym, how do you do it?
