Why Does it Matter if Obama is a Muslim?

"Barack Obama"

Apparently there are a lot of people who still believe that President Obama is a Muslim.

This little tidbit of foolishness comes courtesy of a poll released by the Pew Research Center, which suggested that 12 per cent, or one in five Americans surveyed, believe that Obama is an undercover brother – of Islam.  While the poll suggests that the Muslim believing respondents are conservative Republicans (no surprises there), there are some Democrats as well as Independents, who also subscribe to this asinine belief.

I wonder if these folks, who believe that Obama is a Muslim, also are the same folks, who believe that Obama is a Kenyan-born, Nazi Socialist?  If so, how does that work? That must be one hell of an internal struggle happening inside of his head.

Anyway, our Nazi-Muslim-Socialist president has been, once again, placed on the hot seat to speak to his religious practices – an “issue,” which should have been, as we say on the streets, deaded after the 2008 campaign, when pictures of a Turban-wearing Obama arose and he was asked repeatedly to downplay any connection he might have had to Islam. Two years later, the White House is still making statements about the President’s devotion to Christianity and his proclivity to “pray every day”[tag: cbs news link].

The timing of this poll, as well as all the media attention, couldn’t have been more perfect as it coincides with Obama’s initial statements on the so-called “ground zero mosque,” in which he sort of defended the rights of the Islamic cultural center to be built in the vicinity of Ground Zero. And in true opportunistic fashion, some within the ultra-radical conservative right have used this little meme as a desperate and twisted attempt further play on the fears of an Islamization of America.

This latest perpetrator is Reverend Franklin Graham, son of famed Evangelist Preacher Billy Graham, who told CNN  that “I think the President’s problem is that he was born a Muslim, his father was a Muslim. The seed of Islam is passed through the father like the seed of Judaism is passed through the mother. He was born a Muslim, his father gave him an Islamic name.”

Graham may have a point as it appears that the reverence for religious intolerance doesn’t fall from the xenophobic tree.  But even now as Papa Graham, now well into his golden years, has come to his senses and has made an about face in regards to some of his most controversial beliefs, it seems that the rest of us still have a hard time leaving the decision of who and what folks choose to worship, up to the only entity that matters – and that’s the man upstairs.

Just for the record, if Obama says that he is not Muslim than I believe he’s not Muslim. I mean, he eats pork for goodness sake so that is more than enough evidence for me.  And personally, I wouldn’t care if he prayed to the God of Eye from the planet Nebula just as long as he has some sort of plan to fix the economy, end these two costly wars on terror and get me out of student loan debt.

What bothers me the most is that these questions about Obama’s faith are beginning to sound like slurs for something a little more dubious.  Since the September 11th attacks, Islam has not only been distorted and demonized by some for political gain but the mere mention of the religion has conjured up images of fanaticism and terror attacks in the minds of ordinary citizens.  Because of this, calling someone a Muslim, in some circles, is almost the equivalent of calling somebody a racial epithet.

And while Obama should be free to express his own preference for his devotion, as defined in our Constitution, he should not feel subjected to participating in conversations, which are both irrelevant and irresponsible. At this point, the best thing Obama can do is to either question the merits of the discussion or to say nothing at all.  After all, it’s nobody’s business.

Why does everyone generalize and say "white folks"? These people who hate President Obama are nothing like me or my freinds or family. We work hard, do what we are supposed to as citizens of this country. We dont spend our weekends at rallies asking where the President was born or what religiion he happens to be! We want him to succeed….we want him to fight for us! We are proud of the fact that we have a President who is not your old washed up dirty white man who goes to bed with anyone who will give him some money! Its about time this country woke up and joined the rest of the changing world……I just hope that when my children and my grandchildren grow up that all of this racism is a thing of the past…..maybe everyone will come from so many mixed races that it wont matter anymore cause no one will be "pure"!!!

  • dd

why is it that people cant see the real reason has nothing to do with black or white, christian or muslim… the real reason should be that he said he is a christian before he was elected… u cant b both… if he is muslim then he should have claimed from the begining then we wouldn't have anything to type about..

    • Patricia

You teabaggers are all stuck on stupid, the man is not Muslim. He is a Christian, remember Jeremiah Wright his former pastor, you people demanded that he renounce him. You just make up stuff that's so stupid you can't possibly believe it yourself.

    • terry59

This is the funniest post I've ever read.

  • Cameo

The good thing is, we can change. It's not too late. Just take heed to the warnings from God. Remove the scales from thy eyes so that you can see clearly.

  • Cameo

We'll it started @ recess. Not enough to do on the schoolyard playground. You all need to bend over. Somebody spared the rod. Look what they created. Rebellious Republicans, Spoiled Democrates, and lost Muslims now assembling abroad.

  • Georgetown

Some refuse to see the truth. He said it himself I've known Islam on 3 continents, Africa- Kenyan father, Indonesia- Indonesian Step Father, USA- United Trinity Church in Chicago.

"So I have known Islam on three continents before coming to the region where it was first revealed. That experience guides my conviction that partnership between America and Islam must be based on what Islam is, not what it isn't. And I consider it part of my responsibility as President of the United States to fight against negative stereotypes of Islam wherever they appear."

Egypt makes 4th. And so now he claims his responsibility to Fight for Islamic Muslims and he's not Muslim? Wake up!

  • mbele

The Muslims of Arabia, as well as the Christians of Europe both disrupted and helped to destroy the natural development of Africa and African people, therefore, I could care less about either.

Obama as a a Muslim or Obama as a Christian, is like making a choice between a fox and a wolf and are both destructive to the black man's & woman's ultimate ambitions and development. I don't respect or support either. or Judaism, for that matter.

  • Cameo

Blaa! Blaa! Blaa! You people make life so complicated when it's not. Live and let live. Don't worry, be happy Life is too short.

  • Jay Paradise

So what if he was muslims yall need to get over this fear of muslims!Obama is not a muslim and even if he was thats his choice he is doing his job well people need to stop hating on him.

  • Theresa

Here we go again. White folks are still upset that the United States of America's president is a black man. Come on people, "Get Over It!"

  • He shouldn't be

What matters is that he lied if he is a Muslim. The liar president has to leave (see R.Nixon). Chicago politics does not go over that well in America in general. Neither does blaming the last administration well into the current one. It doesn't matter what color a crook is (see Planet Blago) we laugh at you, and the idiots who voted for you (see stupid white people who felt intimidated by appearing biased) and then we get rid of you. America can be stupid, but not for that long. (see we were born at night, but not last night.)

    • Are You Kidding?

What in the world are you talking about? One thing that I can say about Obama, whether you like him or not, he is not a LIAR. He as kept, for better or for worse, each and every campaign promise that he's made. The lasting effects have yet to be realized, but no one should be surprised about what's going on. And I do recall from 7th grade history that our constitution provides for a SEPARATION of church and state so, no, it shouldn't matter if the President is a Muslim. Even raising the question is racist and anyone who says that they care should be ashamed. Our country was founded on the desire for religious freedom. If your interest in national politics was only peaked during this last election, then you're probably not equipped to have an educated opinion. With that, you should keep them off of public message boards to avoid further embarassment.

Ignorance is a blist. I know that you are not a Christian. Before you comment, get the full knowledge of the subject at hand. Racism is nothing but fear and insecurities of another individual or group of people. If you got Christ in your life, you fear nothing because he is with you. Try Him!

  • yasmine

the poll taken was mostly republicans…

    the President is Christian

  • poorreportingispoor

the title of this article is written poorly. Because of this I am not going to bother reading the article. The title should be, Why would it matter if President Obama is was actually a Muslim.
The way the title is written is giving legitimacy to false Republican meme that our President is a Muslim. Secondly his title is President Obama not Obama!

Good day! You may continue spreading false Republican memes now.

  • reg

It's racism! OMG everything is racism. Give it a rest please! Comparing Obama to Christ…now that is truly funny. I dont recall Obama dying on a cross or being the son of God.

    • Jack

It is racism, but the same old game of white denial continues to thrive in America. If we let the white racist tell it, they never mistreated blacks, Native Americans, Asians, or anyone else.

This is why it is racist. You have a black President, in the 21st century, who has been accused of the following:

      1) Not being American (if you black, you can't be American)
      2) Not being a Christian
      3) Being Worst President in History (Outragous…worst than Buchanan or Nixon? Its just that a black man can't possibly do just as good as white Presidents in the eyes of racist)

  • kimberly anderson

And last, we better stop, look & listen. It does not take an educator to tell us what's happening around us. Time out! Look at what's happening around you. Floods, Earthquakes, etc. resulting in millions being killed, seperated from families, and homeless. God our attention. What more does it take to get it? Put away with all this non-sense, grow-up! Repent!

  • kimberly anderson

God Almighty is the ultimate equalizer. Hatred and Racism, will it ever end? I don't think so. Not until we all come to the realization that it stems from deep rooted insecurities. God loves us all. He hates the sin that we allow to dwell in us.

  • kimberly anderson

If it's not one thing, it's another. Christ suffered the same persecution as Obama has today. I am quite sure that Obama, as a Christian, is prepared and spiritually armed. Once we recognized as a people that our hatred and racism is driving by our on insecurities this world would be a better place. There is nothing new under the sun. If we would read our bible, particuarly the old testament, we will see that the same evil that lurked then, exist today. But God, the almighty states that we, as Christian are more than conquer in Christ. Obama, you are a chosen vessel. Let God use you. You are His. Allow him to continue to do his mighty works in you and through you with the Help of the Holy Spirit. God Bless You. God Bless American.

  • Dara

Let's call this what it really is – thinly-veiled, pathetically obvious racism by white folks who are still sore over the "horror" of having to live under the presidency of a Black man in "their" country.

These good white folks would never dream of publicly calling Obama or any other black person the N word to our faces, so instead they talk in code. Let me decipher some of that code for you:

"Obama needs to prove that he was born in the USA" (did these same people ask George Bush to provide a birth cirtificate to prove his American-ness???)

"Obama is upitty/arrogant" (sounds a lot like calling him an "uppity negro" to me)

"Obama is a socialist" (how dare he suggest that some of the wealth that greedy rich people hoard, could actually help those who are less fortunate???)

"Obama is a muslim" (and we all know that "Muslim" is the New Black)

"Barack HUSSEIN Obama" (oft-repeated during the election campaign, trying to highlight his arabic middle name as though something is wrong with his name)

I could go on ad infinitum, but I think you get my point. Whether you agree is entirely up to you.

All I'm asking is, let's all cut the crap and stop pretending that the people who desperately hold on to these asinine assumptions are doing anything else but marinating in the cess pool that is their own virulent racism.

As far as I'm concerned, I HOPE HE ISN'T A CHRISTIAN. Because if Christianity is supposed to be the answer to all things, and people like George Bush are supposed to be beacons of the faith – then God help us all. Between the crusades, the murder of abortion doctors, the slaughter and forced conversion of Native Americans, etc, etc – I'm not too sure that I trust anyone who clings to tightly to that religion anyway.

And yesss. I am Black. I patiently await the cookie-cutter "i'm-not-a-racist" rebuttals from those who see themselves reflected poorly in my posting.

    • ALBERT DAILEY

take your race card and stick it. nobama is the worst president ever and it aint got jack to do with the color of his skin

      • Jelani

Doesn't the U.S. Constitution guarentee the freedom of religion? Didn't the founding fathers purposely create a separation between church and state so that we wouldn't publicly be worried about the very private matter of an elected representative's choice of faith? This is ridiculous and embarrassing for the country that we question a person's choice of religion more than their policy positions and what's best for the country. "Muslim" is being bantied about as if it is a negative term. It is a religion every bit as legitimate as Christianity or Judaism. Evidently we believe in the promises of freedom just so far as they align with our personal beliefs. Will we ever live up to our American ideals?

      • Jack

It has everything to do with his skin color. I don't know why white racist think they are fooling true Americans with the code language. Racism to its fullest extent. Obama is being put through hell because he is black. Plain and simple, racism is alive and well.

    • Mibadoo Watkins

Well Jankins, allow me to retort. Keep in mind that you wouldve never gotten your puppet in office without us white people.. DONT EVER FORGET THAT!!! We helped you elect Hussein so dont think you have a monopoly on some new way of thinking. You got hustled by Harry Dean and Bill Clinton so put that in your crack pipe and smoke it Cleon. Further, there are plenty of of TRUE black politicians that wouldve been a much better choice. He was raised muslim, his mom was white, his grandparents WHO RAISED HIM (imagine that) were white, so give me a break about him being some black savior. He aint Jackie Robinson or George Washington Carver so give up the devotion, you lost the minute he was elected. Now you have to deal with his utter failure knowing that he shouldnt be there.

      • Pf

REALLY! WHAT YOU ALL STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND IS NO MATTER WHAT YOU SAY, YOU CAN'T TAKE IT AWAY FROM IT. HE WILL ALWAYS BE OUR 44TH PRESIDENT. IF HIS MOM IS AN AMERICAN CITIZEN AND HAVE GIVE BIRTH TO HIM IN ANOTHER COUNTRY HIS IS A US CITIZEN. IF HE IS ASKED AS THE PRESIDENT SPEAK ON THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH OR RIGHT TO OPEN A BUSINESS OR A CHURCH/MOSQUE ETC., THAT DOESN'T MAKE HIM RELATED THAT THAT ISSUE IN ANYWAY. HE IS THE PRESIDENT TO DEFEND US ALL. HOW COULD HE POSIBLY BE A BAD PRESIDENT WHEN ALL HE HAS BEEN DOING IS FIXING LEFT OVER MESS FROM THE PAST 10 YEARS. REALLY! BE NICE PEOPLE WHAT'S DONE IS DONE.

      • Holleigh

Ok so if I understand this correctly, white people are to blame for putting a man into office that other other white people didn't want there? The US population is 310,135,000 of which 75.00% is white as their black counterparts equal 12.4%. Hmmm simple mathematics, says if you didn't want him a the President Elect you should have stopped your NICE WHITE NEIGHBORS from voting for him at the polls. :)

    • Lisa

      I'm a white female & I agree with you 100%.
Obama is the best president the U.S. has had in a long time and some people are just too ignorant to see that. Why is it that Obama is questioned of his faith and citizenship when no other president has had the same? Not all muslims want death and destruction. Not all Christians are loving, peaceful, kind people either. Also, just because someone is not a christian does that mean that they are bad? That they have no decency, morals, brains???? I don't really understand. Would you rather a wife beating, hate filled, child molesting president who goes to a christian church everyday and prays or would you rather a muslim, loving, caring, decent, president. P.S. I don't think Obama is muslim, I do believe he is american and I think Fox News and anyone else is crazy and ignorant when they say otherwise. Islam is not a bad thing- it's the extremists that are the problem. You also have the Christian extremists that do crazy things. america is pathetic. We preach to other countries about freedom and peace and democracy and acceptance… but we don't have it in our own country. We need to start fixing us and leave other countries alone. If Obama was white- none of this stuff would be brought up EVER. He is someone who could unite the country, people of all faiths and colors but some americans won't let that happen. How ignorant that one out of five americans think he's muslim. Get your head out of the sand.

  • http://Patricia Patricia Owens

Make up your mind, you had a problem with Obama when he attended Trinity United Church of Christ. He prays every day as Christian ought to do, morning noon and night per the bible. Muslim pray 5 times per day. He has welcomed all foreign dignitaries per protocol. He is not the only president to skip the boy scouts jamboree, which is a homosexual roundup. You real problem with Obama is he's black, and you just can not accept it that he was elected president. Get over it.

    • Jay

Yeah because it would be completely absurd to fight for the rights of a group you don't belong to! Hell, he's not a child either. Screw early childhood education; it doesn't affect me! Idiot.

    • Jami Smithson

You hit that one right on the damn head, Patricia! That's what the problem REALLY is! It's the elephant in the damn room at this point… They're all just too flippin cowardly to say it! Thanks for saying that!

  • Susan

There is at least one Muslim in the congress that I know about. It doesn't matter if Obama is a Muslim, but it would matter if he chose to conceal it because that would question his motives. When you pick a faith, you are automatically bias which would not be a good thing as a public servant that should represent all.

Republicans supposedly represent about 25 percent of voters. So when you see poll numbers such as the one that shows over 60 percent oppose the Ground Zero mosque, it is a lot more than republicans that represent the opposition.

Clearly Obama has a strong bias towards the Muslim faith in that it is a priority for him as evidence with his support of this mosque and the need to focus NASA to include Muslims.

It is interesting that Obama chose the Christian faith since his mother was an Atheist because she felt organized religion divided people which I happen to agree with as well. Equally his father came to that same conclusion when he apparently fell out of being a Muslim to embrace being an Atheist as well.

A lot of things just plain don't add up.

    • David Tomes

It don't matter which faith President Obama,
is. We have Muslim born each and every day
in American which worked so hard and paid
for their education to get where they are going
or want to be. There should be some questions that
people should not be able to ask our President ,our
Leaders and other individual. What our President
say is are what he is. Let him do his job and you
All stop trying to do his G'D!!!!

      • Leon Archer

It does matter if he is a muslim! I wouldn't of voted for him! Ok, this is America, and I intend for it stay that way. Man some of these people in America need to wake up.

        • hanna

WOW! I guess you ARE a bigot!

        • Sana

Oh, I see, you were one of those people who supported the devil worshiping Bush. He is a Christian and a good human being. You need a reality check.

        • david foss

freedom of religion is one of Americas rights, how is Obama being a Muslim (or not) make him less American?

        • Jenni Williams

          Hey bigot,
America was founded on the basis of religious freedom, and here's a HUGE shocked, IT'S NOT JUST FOR CHRISTIANS. I support Obama. I do not believe he is Muslim. I honestly don't know where his faith lies, but the Nazi Christians in the country are enough to inspire atheism. You think spewing hatred and looking like jackasses is what Jesus wants?

        • Marcia Kia Simpson-J

          Respect to that!

      • LB

I think if a man refuses to pledge to a flag of a country he represents, a light should have went off in many people's heads.
When I walk into some schools and they do not have flags up in every classroom and children no longer are required to say the pledge of alliegance, its a sad day in America. How will these children develop a patriotism for the country they live in?
In Asian schools students and everyone salutes and stands when there pledge is said and national athem played. When its stated or our song is played students and adults do not stand in recreational games or just keep chatting.
If they listen to the words or learn the real meaning of why or when it was written they would jump to their feet. But when you have a man running your country who does not salute your flag or speaks of God hypethetically in a speech what type of patrotism is our leading demonstrating? What is in his heart? Wake up America we are headed for self destruction.

    • Michael

I think that the President is probably like many educated people in a position of power: he expresses a faith in Christianity because of its prominent place in American society. He recognize the fundamental value in Judeo-Christian-Islamic faith and the moral/ethical commandments they have, but he also lives in a world that he has been exposed to multiple irreconcilable belief systems. He may choose to express his spirituality through Christianity, and he may see the knee-jerk politicization of the Islamic faith as petty and distracting, but ultimately, he is probably holding on to a little faith, doubting some of it, and struggling to take care of the job at hand in his mortal life.

    • PEAPOP

It doesn't seem to me you are getting the point. Point is if there is a question about his birth, it should be proved that he is indeed an American citizen period. It is about birth not racism, he has consistently fought everyone that has tried to locate his birth records. Been sued I don't know how many times, and still being sued to find out. Hmmm, the other thing is if he has never lived in Connecticut why is his social security number a Connecticut number.

      • Holleigh

I can see where your coming from but at the same time I cannot. The part about the Presidents social security number. The first 3 digits tell you what state/territory the ssn was applied. I have one that states California. Im not from that state.

    • Tina Smith

It doesn't matter. But what does matter is if he is agrees with some of his Islam brothers that "all infidels must die", and if he is secretly doing a jehad on your God Fearing Great Country. He is the leader of the free world. That means were all free , Muslims do not share this belief. Remember one of the first things he did, was to do a t.v. bit to the muslim world apogizing to them for us bad Americans and all the wrong we did to them. WTF!!!!!really, he has devided the country, we all see balck and white alot more now then before ya all drank that kol-aid. I would love to be proved wrong that he doesn't have it in for your grate country. But if a uneducated, middle aged housewife like me, who is very good at reading people. Has had a bad feeling about this man from day one. BTW I would have voted for Powel, over MC Caine. SO it aint about color . God take care of us. We all need to pray that I am wrong. I know I do.

      • LB

I think that many people fail to read the history and goal of the Muslim world. I am speaking of the Islamic faith and not the Nation of Islam because it is a sect.
I think if more people would read instead of defending the Islamic faith they would realize that their goal is not to coexist with anyother faith.
We perish for lack of knowledge.
        Knowledge is Power.

    • gil Bo.

Barak Hussein Obama is muslim according to the islam religion which considers a muslim a person with a muslim father or mother. Since both his father and stepfather were moslems, there is no doubt. Now he may have converted to christianity but baptism is required and there is no proof or actions that have led to accept this conversion. In my humble view, Obama does not feel either muslim or christian , he plays the parts when it is required as a smart politician for votes during an election . The end justifies the means.
