I live in a city where there is a lot of wealth. It’s not unheard of that a couple might go to a six-course private chef’s tasting dinner for a first date and away for a resort vacation for a third one. But when people have a lot of money and free time, it’s easy to use elaborate gifts and activities like that as a replacement for an actual connection or real effort. Think about it: what actually takes more effort 1) Grocery shopping and cooking a five-course meal (and cleaning up after it) for a date or 2) Throwing down your credit card? Fancy and expensive dates and presents can be nice but as a supplement to real care—not as the whole relationship. At the end of the day, if I had to choose between small gestures and large ones, I’d go with small. Here are small gestures that are more meaningful than grand ones.

Walking the dog so I can sleep in

There are many mornings when I’m just so exhausted I don’t think I could keep my eyes open to safely walk our pup. On these days, my boyfriend knows what’s going on, and he says, “I’ll do it—you go back to sleep.” Oh, and by the way—she is really my dog who he just inherited through the relationship. She is just my responsibility.
