HelloBeautiful and MadameNoire have collaborated on a brand new digital talk show called Listen To Black Women that discusses the issues that affect us most and in our first official episode, we’re asking the question: Who gets to make history as a Black woman?
Along with the rise of unapologetic Black women in the entertainment industry like Cardi B and Tiffany Haddish the topic of respectability politics has arisen with audiences criticizing these women for not fitting into expected social norms. Meanwhile, Mo’Nique, arguably the most unapologetic of them all, has struggled to find mass support because her message doesn’t come in a package we’re comfortable with.
In this episode, we discuss how respectability politics has affected these women’s careers, we share insights from you, our audience, on whether you think there are certain rules celebrities should subscribe to, and we have a discussion with writer Shaira Chaer on how callout culture on social media shapes perceptions of these women.
Tune in to the episode above and make sure you take our next poll to have your voice heard in the conversation.
