I’ve always wondered about the nature of the relationship Eddie Murphy maintains with the daughter he shares with singer and media personality, Melanie Brown, aka Mel B.

After demanding a DNA test before acknowledging himself as her father, I assumed that it was a bit strained. According to a recent report from The Blast, it was further complicated by Mel B.’s ex husband Stephen Belafonte.

In court documents attempting to deny Belafonte’s visitation with Angel, the 10-year-old daughtet Brown and Murphy share, Brown accused Belafonte of trying to sabotage  Angel’s relationship with her father.

Mel B. claims that during her marriage, Belafonte wanted her “to have nothing to do with” Murphy. The former couple began dating shortly after Brown gave birth to Angel. She said before she filed for divorce from Belafonte last year, she set up a meeting between Murphy and Angel. But while she was sleeping, Belafonte took her phone and started sending messages to Murphy’s assistant. While Brown said she didn’t know what the message said, “As a result of Stephen’s actions, Angel’s father canceled the visitation and did not want to have any interactions with Stephen.”

To this day, Mel B. said Murphy wants to have nothing to do with Belafonte.

Now there’s no reason for it. But according to Brown, Belafonte’s “childish action only sought to delay Angel’s unification with her biological father.”

Thankfully, despite Belafonte’s efforts, Angel and Murphy have managed to reconnect. She said that during their first visit, “Eddie gave her the biggest hug and repeatedly told her how much he missed her and how much he loves her.”

Brown said that Murphy bought Angel a cell phone to stay in contact with her and bought her two French Bulldog puppies for her birthday. She named one of them Axel after Murphy’s Beverly Hills Cop character, Axel Foley.

Brown also states that Murphy wanted Angel to attend the same school as his other children so that they can all receive the same level of education. Brown says that Angel is thriving in the new school and her demeanor has changed since she’s separated from Belafonte.
