Cape Town Mom Hopes to Solve Black Girl, Big Hair Struggles With “Swimma Caps”
On Friday, a Nor’easter decided to give Philly residents a bitter welcome to March with a beating of 60 mph winds, snow and rain. And then there was me, at work with a cute little leather jacket on that was in no way appropriate for the weather. My hair was in a big behind bun of box braids sitting on top of my head that no hood, infinity scarf or umbrella could effectively cover. This is a struggle any black girl with big hair is familiar with and probably has gotten extremely creative in an attempt to solve.
Nomvuyo Treffers hopes to end your big hair, don’t care worries when it comes to spending some time in a pool near you this summer. The Cape Town-based mom has created a line of swim caps for those who find it difficult to fit their braids, afros, or locs under traditional swim caps.
ESSENCE reports the idea for “Swimma Caps” came after Treffers realized that few swim caps currently on the market are designed to fit over high-volume hair like the styles she and her daughters sport. Treffers then decided that maintaining natural hairstyles while still enjoying activities like swimming should not be a chore. Swimma Caps come in variety of colors and sizes and also offers a line of shower caps as well.
Swimma Caps ship internationally as well. You can stock up on your caps for the summer here.
