Common dating

Entertainment correspondent Nischelle Turner, whom you’ve probably seen on HLN’s Showbiz Tonight, CNN and Entertainment Tonight, visited Steve Harvey’s daytime talk show earlier this month to catch up with Steve about her dating life. Watching their conversation reminded me of how it works when you go home for the holidays and your family interrogates you about why you still haven’t settled down yet. It’s always you, not them.

The 43-year-old came to the show with some good excuses, and a good sense of humor about it all, because Harvey definitely made her seem like she was some sort of sad sap sabotaging her own dating life, even though that was clearly not the case.

“Nischelle, we go way back,” he said. “I set you and your mother both up on dates before. Her and her momma! Did any of those turn into anything?”

“What had happened was…[laughs],” she said. “Here’s what I said. I said I was going to come here today and I swore I wasn’t going to get the Steve face. Last time we talked I told you I met a fella. We had been dating for about six months. Well, we’re on a break. I don’t know why we’re on a break!”

Harvey assumed that she was the reason for the break.

“Who asked for the break?” he asked suspiciously.

“It wasn’t me,” she said in response.

“Oh, he asked for the break?”

“He asked for the break,” she said. “I’ve never had anyone ask me for a break before so I feel like it’s broke. I feel like it’s done.”

From there, Harvey tried to turn things around again to make it seem like she was solely the reason behind her singlehood, despite heavy evidence that that may not be the case.

“Well, let’s just cut this out,” he said. “Because I know for a fact that another friend of mine has expressed interested in you. Guess who wants to take her out? Common.”

After the audience went wild, Turner shared that the rapper never asked out her out, and when she finally decided to shoot her shot, it was too late.

“Ok, listen. I finally got up enough nerve to ask Common out for coffee,” she said. “Because we had been playing this reindeer game for a minute of you know, flirt, ‘Hey, hey, hey.’ And he had started dating someone already.”

It’s unclear if that “someone” was Common’s current partner, political commentator Angela Rye. But Harvey’s response?

“‘Cause I told you to quit playing,” he said.

“Every woman in the room went, ‘Common?!'” he said, alluding to the fact that everyone in the audience would say she missed out.

Based on the conversation, it seemed like Turner had actually been making an effort to put herself out there and to nurture relationships, but the men she was encountering? They weren’t available — emotionally or literally. And not to mention, she’s even given her heart — and her money — to guys like former NFL player Clinton Porter, who walked out of their relationship owing her (and a number of other women) $500,000.

So while she may not have had the best luck at love, it would be great if Harvey had some questions for or advice to offer the men out there she’s encountering. While we can hold ourselves back in some ways in this dating game, accountability can and should go both ways.
