Sean Jean Collaborating With Jean-Michel Basquiat Artwork To Celebrate Its 20th Anniversary

Can you believe Diddy debuted his Sean Jean fashion line 20 years ago? Back then the brand was known for it’s velour track suits (made even more popular by Diddy’s ex-bae Jennifer Lopez) and logo t-shirts. Now in celebration of it’s 20th anniversary, the brand has several collaborations planned with it’s first launch featuring the work of renowned contemporary artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat.

ESSENCE magazine recently sat down with Sean John President, Jeff Tweedy to discuss the decision to tap into the legendary artist’s work for inspiration:

“When Puff and I sat down to discuss what we wanted to do to celebrate the 20th anniversary, we focused on how do we cultivate the idea of fashion, pop-culture, and entertainment.”

“When we looked at that and over the years who exemplifies pop-culture it is Michel Basquiat.”

Tweedy also spoke on the need to educate shoppers who may not be familiar with Basquiat’s artistry on his contribution to contemporary art as we now know it:

“We wanted to pay homage to Basquiat’s creative genius with this capsule collection. Basquiat’s influence on culture transcended race and class to highlight more pressing issues on society that are still relevant today. Using his art as a medium to fight racism, combat cultural appropriation or rebelling against power structures—Basquiat always challenged the standard. We felt that it was vital to tell his story and educate our consumers on this talented artist.”

Diddy himself expressed that one of the reasons he was personally drawn to Basquiat was because of the progression displayed in his work during his brief career:

“Despite never being formally trained Basquiat was able to transition from an underground unknown in New York City to an internationally acclaimed artist. It was his story and steady climb in the art world that really intrigued our team when we were mapping out this collaboration.”

“Basquiat used his art as a vessel to delve further into his definition of being a black man in America. The Sean John creative team drew inspiration from the culmination of Basquiat’s work by mixing his profound messaging with his daring aesthetic.”

The line reinterprets several of Basquiat’s famous pieces including “Pez Dispenser”, “Melting Pot of Ice”, and “Dog, 1982” in eight stylish pieces that are available at Macy’s both in-store and on-line.
