The fervor surrounding the upcoming release of Black Panther has reached an all-time high with the movie coming to theaters later this week. It only made sense that the stars of this history-making film appear on the cover of the newly Black-owned Essence.

The male and female stars of the film, Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Angela Bassett, Daniel Kaluuya, Forrest Whitaker, and newcomer, Letitia Wright, appear on double covers for the March 2018 issue.

Dana Gurira said this of the film.

“The idea of creating a scenario where you’re seeing very powerful, empowered Africans is really thrilling to me, something my heart, soul, and spirit yearned to see.”

The powerful African nation was not created by happenstance. Director and screenwriter Ryan Coogler said, “I had really been studying the effects of colonization and the African Diaspora, specifically as it relates to African-Americans and Africans, and what I hit on was this concept of what it means to be African. I pitched that to the studio as a main theme of exploration, and they were totally interested, which is, to their credit, really cool.”

Gurira echoes, “What would the African world have been without that imposition?”

Production designer, Hannah Beachler, also a Black woman spent a month studying in South Africa to get not only the look but the mannerisms of the characters in the film.

“We’re trying to figure out how people act because your spirit is going to be different if you were never oppressed.”
