Millennials Making Moves: Ariell Johnson, The Only Black Female Owner Of A Comics Shop On The East Coast

February 13, 2018  |

Millennials are making moves and Ariell Johnson is one of them. The Temple University graduate is the Founder and President of Amalgam Comics & Coffeehouse, Inc. in Philadelphia, PA, which is the first Black-owned comic store on the East Coast. For the 34-year-old, her hybrid shop is an extension of the need for more representation of African Americans in all facets of life, including the comic book industry.

“It’s important for audiences to see Black superheroes because, first of all, for Black audiences, [to just see] characters who look like themselves, who are taking charge, who are in the lead, and who are not someone else’s sidekick,” she said.

Check out our full chat with Johnson in the video above to see how she made the move to open her own coffee shop and what moves she’s making next.
