NYC Teacher Suspended After Stepping On Students’ Backs During Slavery Lesson
A Bronx, NY teacher is under fire after allegedly stepping on a student’s back during a lesson about slavery, the NY Daily News reports.
While teaching the lesson, Middle School 118 social studies teacher Patricia Cummings had three students lie on the classroom floor to show students how little space slaves had on slave ships. After one student answered “fine” when Cummings asked how did it feel to be a slave, Cummings allegedly put her foot on the students’ back and asked, “See how it feels to be a slave?”
Cummings was suspended for a few days and then returned Thursday (Feb. 1st), only be reassigned later that day.
“While the investigation has not been completed, these are deeply disturbing allegations, and the alleged behavior has no place in our schools or in society,” Education Department spokeswoman Toya Holness told the Daily News.
This is Cummings’ first incident of her teaching career. She refused to comment on these allegations when approached by reporters.
