Welcome Black! Twitter Celebrates Don Lemon After He Called Trump A Racist & Shamed His Supporters
One of the only good things about Donald Trump’s presidency is that it woke a lot of people up. All of a sudden, White folks are willing to acknowledge that racism just might be an issue we’re not entirely over yet. Black folk who have been happy to go along with the status quo feel compelled to speak up, organize and more engaged in the political process because only God knows which new ways this administration and the Republican Congress will find to attempt to further destroy this country and its tenets.
One of these people seems to be CNN anchor Don Lemon. You may remember, the Black community has had a fraught relationship with Lemon. From his detached coverage of the protesting in Ferguson, Missouri, to supporting “Stop and Frisk,” to his suggestion that we could cure racism and save the Black community by pulling up our pants and refraining from littering, there was more than enough evidence to suggest that he just didn’t get it. And as one of the few Black men anchoring on a national news platform, it was a damn shame.
But this Trump presidency has affected Lemon like it’s affected the rest of us. In a word: shook. And thankfully, instead of doubling down on his respectability politics or his attempts to be the more palatable Negro, Lemon has righteously decided to use his position to speak truth to power.
You know he was doing something right when Trump went out of his way to call him the “dumbest man on television.”
And despite the criticism from the highest office in the land, Lemon is not backing down.
Yesterday, we were hit with yet another detestable quote from President Trump, who said in reference to immigration in the United States.
According to the Washington Post, in the Oval Office yesterday, Donald Trump in speaking about immigrants from El Salvador, Haiti and other African nations said,
“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump then asked why people from countries like Norway weren’t immigrating to the United States at the same numbers. And then speaking of Haitians specifically, Trump said, ““Why do we need more Haitians? Take them out.”
As repulsed as we all should be by his comments, I can’t say I’m surprised. This is the man he’s shown himself to be. And during his hour on CNN last night, Don Lemon called a thing a thing.
And then Lemon took it a step further by attacking Trump’s supporters. And this is where the real read came in.
Whew, chile. I never thought I’d see the day. But applause, kudos, salute to Don Lemon. Come on! Matter fact, I’m preparing his plate at the cookout. (And I’m not even one of those type of women.) I’m not the only one celebrating. Twitter is also having a field day comparing the Don Lemon of 2012 to the Don Lemon of 2018. Check out the memes on the following pages.
And if you’re wondering what Don Lemon makes of all this, he’s here for it.
Welcome Black, Don!
