Earlier this week the media was in frenzy as pictures surfaced confirming The-Dream’s infidelity in his marriage to Christina Milian. Some men shared their disbelief while most women shared their disgust. We’ve seen this too many times before, black love that comes crashing down in selfishness and infidelity. It leads us to wonder, does Black Love still exist?
Well, although seemingly rare these days, black love does exist; and it is indeed a beautiful thing. As women, most of us are naturally romantic creatures. Let’s face it we love to be in love; and just the thought of it. We all cried or at least muttered an “awww” as Barack and Michelle Obama danced at the Inaugural Ball the night of the Inauguration. It didn’t help (or hurt) that the song they danced to, “At Last,” was performed by none other than ‘crazy in love’ Beyonce, who wed her long time beau Jay-Z the previous year. It was at this moment (at least for me) that we saw black love at the forefront. Both of these couples, though different in lifestyles, all share one thing in common: they give us single women at least a pinch of hope.
From Hollywood Love (Jada and Will) to Hood Love (T.I & Tiny), we’re somewhat comforted to know that some couples don’t mind confessing their love and making it a notion to stay together.
It’s easy to give up on black love when we hear the statistics regarding single, black women. Better yet, we don’t even have to hear the statistics, we live them every day. Through our own dating lives and the lives of our single friends, it is easy to be discouraged.
Well, damn the statistics today! Let’s celebrate the fact that black love still exists and there are plenty of couples that are making it last. This is your feel good story of the day, ladies!
