Amma Asante

British filmmaker Amma Asante was a driving force behind the 2013 hit “Belle,” but before she hopped into the director’s chair she could have gone down a number of different career paths. To combat her shyness, her parents enrolled her in drama lessons, prompting her to become a child actor in her native U.K. Later, in an effort to ensure her daughter had a back-up career in case entertainment wasn’t in the cards, Asante’s mother encouraged her to enroll in secretarial school. It was there that Asante, hoping to improve her typing, wrote a sitcom and began to really hone her craft.
