I wish I was coming with good news but unfortunately, that’s not the case. Instead, we have yet another incident of the Republicans seeking to undo everything President Obama did during his eight years in office. We have Republicans looking out for the interests of big business instead of their constituents.

It happened again today as members of the Federal Communications Commission voted to repeal Net Neutrality protections.

Net neutrality prevents internet service providers from blocking content on the internet, charging for websites and applications you want to use or slowing down the servers in order to direct you to a competitors website to use/buy their product or service.

In 2015, the FCC decided to enact laws that keep the internet free and allows users to share information without interference.

But recently, a former Verizon lawyer and an appointee from Donald Trump, Ajit Pai, sought to repeal the net neutrality laws. And the FCC, controlled by a Republican majority voted 3-2 against Democrats in favor of the repeal. 3 people made a decision impacting hundreds of millions.

The consequences will affect all of us but will be particularly damaging to marginalized and minority communities.

Lack of access to the internet as we know it today will disrupt free enterprise, access to information and content that you choose to partake in online.

While the repeal passed at the FCC level, it still has a way to go. In the meantime, to make sure this does not become our new reality, check out what lawmakers have to say about the decision and learn what you can do to prevent it from becoming law.
