Desiree Gibbon, a model from Queens, NY, went to visit Jamaica for a month to earn and save money to attend film school. She was supposed to return to Queens on Nov. 30th, but she didn’t. The 26-year-old was found on the side of a rural road with throat slashed and body bloodied on Nov. 26th four miles from Montego Bay, NY Daily News reports.
It has been speculated by Jamaican police that Gibbon knew her killer.
“We believe more or less that she may have been familiar with the person who did this,” Jamaica Constabulary Force Supt. Michael Phipps said.
Gibbon was staying at a hotel that her grandparents own in Jamaica while she looked for bartending jobs. After returning to Queens, she was planning on working at a record label.
She was found fully clothed but without her cell phone. During the investigation, police have been looking at surveillance footage at nearby bars that Gibbon may have visited that night before her death.
Her boyfriend, Phil Rodriguez, told the News that Gibbon had been having some friction with some new acquaintances she had made while in Jamaica. Her mother, Andrea Cali-Gibbon, also suspected something when she was alerted that someone had tried to make a wire transfer from her daughter’s bank card.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Dec. 5th.
Her family has started a GoFundMe page to raise money for Desiree’s transport back to New York and her funeral.
