Having a big event to look forward to is a lot of fun, but it also puts a lot of pressure on that day. You do your best to take vitamin C tablets leading up to it, so you don’t get sick. You cut out your nightly candy habit so you won’t be bloated the day of. And you have picked out the perfect outfit. But it can feel like all of that hard work goes down the drain if you find that you have blemishes a mere 48 hours before the big day. Sure, you can use makeup to cover them up. But that means you’ll have to run to the restroom every few hours to make sure that your wine glass or that mushroom puff you ate didn’t wipe off some of your cover-up. Plus, there are some blemishes that no amount of makeup can conceal. So, here are ways to get rid of blemishes when you’re in a pinch.

Wash your face with a gentle cleanser

Before trying any of the tips we’re about to propose, wash your face with a gentle cleanser. You don’t want any excess dirt or grime blocking our remedies from working on your pores.

Use calamine lotion

If you’re dealing with overall puffiness and inflammation, try applying calamine lotion to your face. This is the same stuff used to treat poison ivy rashes because it works wonders at reducing swelling and redness.

Try eye drops

Eye drops are made to reduce redness, and that doesn’t have to be just in your eyes. A decongestant called tetrahydrozoline works to temporarily narrow blood vessels and you can apply it to blemishes, too.

Grab some aloe vera

The polysaccharides help your skin grow new cells, which can heal blemishes and scar tissue. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which is why we apply it to sunburns.

Apply an ice cube

We know ice cubes can reduce swelling after an injury or allergic reaction, so why not use them to reduce swelling in pimples? Press ice cubes against your blemishes for about 15 minutes at night and in the morning you’ll find they’ve mostly gone down.

Take an anti-inflammatory

You’ve likely noticed that anti-inflammatory is the word of the day on this list. So, pop an actual anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen to reduce swelling in your face. You can also make a nice little mask from crushed up ibuprofen, baking soda, and water.

Try tea tree oil

You feel a cooling sensation when you apply tea tree oil to your skin. That’s the oil going to work on your pores, opening the sebaceous glands and drying out white or blackheads.

Dab on salicylic acid

Salicylic acid is the main active ingredient in most acne washes but you can use it as a spot treatment, too. Look for a salicylic-based cream to dab onto your blemishes with a q-tip.

Use a sulfur-based mask as spot treatment

Sulfur-based masks also do wonders on acne. They suck up excess oil, exfoliate dead skin cells, and clean out pores.

Pat on some peppermint

The menthol in peppermint has a wonderful cooling, anti-inflammatory effect on the skin. It also stimulates your skin’s oil production and flow, sending trapped oil to the surface of the skin where you can wipe it away.

Apply yogurt

Yogurt is rich in probiotics, which work to calm inflammation all over our bodies—from inside our intestines to the surface of our skin. Try making a yogurt-based mask when you’re breaking out to clear out bacteria.

Use a clay mask

A clay mask will do a wonderful job at cleaning out bacteria. Clay can bind to toxins and remove them from your pores when you wash it off. It also leaves your skin looking brighter and more toned.

Or an oatmeal mask

The antioxidants in oatmeal can reduce swelling and the texture can exfoliate old dead skin cells.

Dab on lemon juice

The antimicrobial properties of lemon will kill bacteria in your pores. Its acid also has a lightening effect so if your blemish issues stem from hyperpigmentation, this could be your solution.

Slather on some egg

The vitamin E in egg not only moisturizes the skin but it also helps it look tighter and toned.
