Nashville Teacher Suspended Without Pay After Removing Student’s Hijab

November 12, 2017  |

A Nashville teacher is under fire for removing the hijab of a female student and posting it on her Snapchat account. According to reports, in the video, which was recorded in a New Vision Academy Charter School classroom, the student was told her hair was too pretty to cover up.

The student seemed embarrassed, covering her face as the teacher revealed her hair to the class. There were two videos of the insensitive gesture, one with the caption  ‘pretty hair” and the other  with “lol all that hair cover up.”

When confronted, the teacher allegedly told principal Dr. Tim Malone that she did not post a video and when she removed the hijab it was not to be disrespectful. The teacher is now suspended without pay.

“The actions depicted in the Snapchat video do not reflect the values, culture or climate of New Vision Academy,” Dr. Malone said in a statement. “New Vision will use this video as an opportunity to press forward with increasing cultural sensitivity and awareness. New Vision apologizes for this unfortunate incident, and will be better in the future.”

The video was sent to the media by a viewer who was disturbed by the incident.
